UntoldStories #1 — My Life in One and a Half Page
Written on February 4th, 2019
My name is Hilda. I’m 21 years old and I'm the eldest daughter. I have two younger sisters who aren’t so small anymore. They’re even taller than me which is kind of annoying to acknowledge, haha. But that’s okay, I still love them and they still respect me anyway as the eldest.
I was born in Yogyakarta, but honestly I’m originally from Cilacap, Central Java and also (I can say) Palu, Central Sulawesi. Why did I say that? Because my mom comes from Cilacap and dad is from Palu. They first met each other in Yogyakarta when they were still in college. The three of us lived there for 3 years after they graduated and then we moved to Palu.
In Palu, I spent all of my childhood. All was good and fun. There were so many bittersweet memories there. Even when I saw the pictures, the memories came flooding back. I spent 10 years living in Palu, after that, we moved to Cilacap to get a better education for me and my sisters. In Cilacap, we lived in a beautiful small village up the hills.
Even for a small district, they have a better quality of education than Palu (no offends, but I guess so). I can say that, because when I moved from Palu, I already had my first year of JHS there. I finished my JHS in Cilacap well, quite satisfying I should tell, even it was really hard at first. I had a problem with the language, which was unusual to me. But as time went by, I could adapt to it well.
After graduating from JHS, I moved to central Cilacap alone and lived in a boarding house. I made it to be a student of my dream school, SHS 1 Cilacap. But I had no clue why I was selected to be in a class called “Leader Class”. That made our class was a bit different than other classes in our badge. It was a pilot project from the Regent (Bupati) to collect the "best students" (they said) from every district of Cilacap, and they trained us with semi-military and leadership lessons, and gave us scholarships that freed us from the educational fee for approximately 2 years.
At first, some of our seniors or even friends in the same badge treated us in a strange way, like we’re outsiders. Not a few of them underestimated us. I didn’t really know why.
We didn’t ask to be in that class anyway, but the 27 of us were united by that. We became much stronger and solid afterwards. I really love to be in that class, besides the fact that they’re really ambitious and super smart, they are so generous and fun. They’re the type of people who won’t let you down and they’ll support you whatever it is to always do the good things. #positivevibesonly :)
What I’ve learnt a lot from them is about how to be kind, honest, brave, religious, ambitious, and highly motivated at the same time. Who I am now isn’t more than what I’ve learnt from them. They are the best gift in my life. I think when we’re together, we’re really super cool and special in our own ways.
Three years of learning and struggling among the super friends, I finished my SHS and entered a new stage ; college life. I’ve studied at Faculty of Agriculture UPNYK since 2015, majoring in Agrotechnology. I’ve made my college life a lot fun. I’ve struggled to understand the subjects. I’ve joined my major’s organization and also lab-work assistants.
I also had a wonderful experience when I was in the 6th semester. I had the chance to join a research internship program at Tokyo University of Agriculture & Technology (TUAT), Japan for 2 months. Our topic research was about precision agriculture. We did so much fun, both when doing lab-work experiments and also field-works in Matsuyama city.
In the end of the program, I had to present my report during the internship. After that, I had a free time enjoying my favorite hobby; sightseeing. I strolled around the city (Tokyo) in only less than 7 days. But that was really fun and amazing! Experiencing a new culture, hospitality, and study ethic in Japan was beyond my expectation. Never have I ever expected such things happened in my bachelor's life.
It was literally the highlight of my life so far. I hope in the future I can have an experience of continuing master’s degree or more, either in Japan or another amazing country. For now, I have to give all my attention only to thesis to get a bachelor’s degree. So far so good, yeah, wish me luck!
